Richmond City Council Meeting on Rent Control

The problem of rent increases in Richmond has reached a crisis level, with rents rising at rates more than10 times that of inflation or average wage growth. We are fighting for a Rent Control policy that would prevent landlords from increasing rents by more than 3% per year and unfairly evicting tenants.

ACCE members Alma Rodriguez and Roberto Cortes just received a notice that on August 1st their rent will increase from $850 to $1250 (47% increase). Roberto earns $18 an hour doing construction. Alma is a homemaker. They've lived in Richmond for the past 14 years. They live at South 15th and Maine. They are not sure what they are going to do but they say they can't afford the increase.

Alma and Roberto's case shows why its so important that our city council passes strong tenant protections for Richmond residents.
