Despite Airbnb’s business model that has exacerbated San Francisco’s affordable housing crisis by breaking hotel laws, encouraging realestate speculation, and exploiting loopholes in renter protections, they owe over $25 million in taxes and need to pay their fair share just like everybody else!
Mayor Ed Lee ignored thousands of emails and phone calls to make sure Airbnb paid their $25 million in unpaid taxes. Then, he quickly signed a highly controversial bill that completely legalized Airbnb's operations without making them pay $25 million in taxes they've evaded for years. That's $25 million dollars that could go towards funding schools and affordable housing in our city.
Why did Mayor Lee let a tax evading company off the hook? Evidence shows his biggest campaign contributor, Silicon Valley billionaire and new SF powerbroker, Ron Conway is to blame. The millions he has donated to first elect Ed Lee for Mayor and then help advance key Supervisors has nearly paid off with huge profits when Airbnb goes public.
As your constituent, I pay my taxes, and I think Airbnb should as well! It's outrageous you quickly legalized Airbnb's controversial business model without requiring them to pay the $25 million that they owe San Francisco.
$25 Million from Airbnb tax evasion could go a long way to invest in our communities! This giveaway diverts money from our schools, transportation, affordable housing programs and vital services for seniors, youth and families. You shouldn’t be giving billion-dollar corporations and your biggest donors special breaks at the expense of working people in our neighborhood.
I join with my neighbors in demanding that you have Airbnb pay its back taxes and all expenses incurred by the city immediately!
It is time to stand up for our neighborhoods and make billion-dollar corporations pay their fair share!
